The ^VIIIth Colloque des Sciences, Cultures et Technologies de l'Université d'Abomey-Calavi will take place from September 25 to 29, 2023 in Cotonou, Benin, on the theme of " Valuing endogenous knowledge, a guarantee of sustainable development ".

In conjunction with this event, the College of Engineering in Energy, Transport Infrastructures and Environment (COE EIE) of the Ecole Polytechnique d'Abomey Calavie (EPAC), the African Center of Excellence for Water and Sanitation C2EA of the Institut National de l'Eau (INE), the African Center of Excellence in Mathematical Sciences, informatique et application (CEA SMIA) of the Institut de Mathématiques et de Sciences Physiques (IMSP) - members of the RES'EAU pan-African multidisciplinary research network of excellence on sustainable water management - will bring together nearly 80 doctoral students for the second edition of the multidisciplinary doctoriales, in themed workshops, including one dedicated to the RES'EAU themes of " Water, Sanitation and Climate Change ".

🇨🇮 The RES'EAU network of African Centers of Excellence for sustainable water management held a regional training workshop from July 24 to 28, 2023 at the Pôle Scientifique et d'Innovation (PSI) of the Université Félix Houphouet-Boigny, African Center of Excellence on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Agriculture (CEA-CCBAD), Centre National de Calcul de Côte d'Ivoire (CNCCI) on the Bingerville Campus, Côte d'Ivoire.

Among the continents considered most exposed to climate change, Africa is one of the most vulnerable. With little capacity for adaptation, extreme climatic events often have a dramatic impact. African countries are vulnerable to climate change because of their agriculture-based economic models. Hence the importance of deepening our knowledge of regional climate trends and their impact on strategic sectors of activity for sustainable development.

However, regionalized projections cannot be used directly for impact studies at local level, due to two main problems: they are biased with respect to observations, and their spatial scale is too coarse for certain applications.

To bridge the gap between the information needed by experts for impact studies and the data available from regional climate, hydrological and agronomic models, bias correction and statistical downscaling methods are used to correct model variables and make the statistical distribution of daily data identical to the distribution observed at each point.

The aim of this training workshop, which brought together 20 researchers, was therefore to work on the reliable and corrected environmental data needed for policy development and evaluation, and to support adaptation, planning and risk and disaster reduction policies in 4 main areas: food security and agriculture; water and disasters; meteorology and climate; land use, coastal zones and forest management; and land use planning.

This capacity-building workshop is supported by the Centre d'Excellence Africain CEA-CCBAD, the ACE Partner program (RES'EAU project), the Programme d'Appui Stratégique à la Recherche Scientifique (PASRES), and ATOS-BULL. As part of the CNCCI's activities, and more specifically on the initiative of its Pôle de Simulation Numérique (PSN) "Climat et Développement Durable (CLIM2D)", led by Université Félix Houphouët Boigny and supported by IRD, CNRS, WASCAL and CEA-CCBAD, this workshop is being held under the aegis of the Direction Générale de la Recherche et de l'Innovation (MESRS), and CAMES.

The effect of the covid-19 pandemic is widely known around the world today. In the world of education. Universities have had to adapt quickly to covid-19, changing the way they teach courses from a physical model to one that takes distance learning into account. With the impact of covid-19 still visible today, NET-WATER's ACEs decided to strengthen their ability to deliver courses following a blended learning model with online and physical classes.

The study is being carried out by the Disctance learning of the Kwame N'krumah University of Science and Technology, which has extensive experience in distance and online learning.

The objectives of the study are as follows:

1. Identify the problems encountered by RES-EAU CEAs during the Covid-19 pandemic to ensure continuity of teaching and research activities;
2. Carry out a diagnostic of the IT resources and equipment, digital technology platforms and connectivity available for each African Center of Excellence for teaching, research and distance work;
3. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of teacher-researchers and research staff support dedicated to distance teaching and research;
4. Identify capacity-building needs for teacher-researchers and support staff in the field of digital education;
5. Identify best practices in the use of digital science and technology in research and higher education at CEA ;
6. Identify the distance learning courses offered by the CEA and the courses they plan to offer by distance learning;
7. Map the key players and partners involved in digital education and science;
8. Draw up a digital reinforcement and development plan for each RES-EAU CEA, including strategy, action plans, budgets, sources of funding and possibilities for inter-CEA pooling.

This study should enable each CEA to formulate a capacity-building plan for co-education.

RES-EAU, in partnership with Bond'Innov, is currently carrying out a study to intensify collaboration between CEAs and the socio-economic sector.

The objectives of this study are to: 

1. Identify and map the potential socio-economic actors who collaborate with RES-EAU's AECs in each country and in the sub-region;
2. Identify potential areas of collaboration between RES-EAU and the various players identified;
3. Set up mechanisms to facilitate collaboration between RES-EAU and identified stakeholders
4. Propose the terms of reference for the first workshop/framework for consultation between RES-EAU members and socio-economic players

This study should ensure that RES-EAU increases its collaboration with the socio-economic sector on key issues in the sustainable management of water resources.
