1st Call for applications: WANIDA Scholarships 2020-2021

Introduction

The West African Network of Infectious Diseases ACEs (WANIDA) aims to enhance collaboration among West African health research institutions funded under the World Bank’s African Centres of Excellence (ACE) Impact project.

WANIDA is funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, IRD). The ACE Partner project seeks to create and ensure the influence and sustainability of thematic networks with the aim of positioning them as scientific and academic leaders for development in West Africa.

WANIDA includes:

  • West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious (WACCBIP), University of Ghana, which is the coordinating hub for the network;
  • African Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety (ACEMFS), Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria;
  • African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), Redeemer’s University, Ede, Nigeria;
  • African Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biology (ACENTDFB), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria;
  • African Centre of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP) in Nigeria; Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria;
  • Centre d’Excellence Africain en Innovations Biotechnologiques pour l’Elimination des Maladies à Transmission Vectorielle (ITECH-MTV), Université Nazi Boni, Burkina Faso;
  • Centre d’Excellence Africain – Prévention et Contrôle des Maladies Transmissibles (CEA-PCMT) Université Gamal Abdel Nasser, Conakry, Guinea.

WANIDA promotes high quality postgraduate training, enhanced capacity to deliver applied research, and encourages aspiring African scientists to work in a collaborative research environment by enabling them to network and create partnerships with other scientists throughout Africa.

WANIDA is offering partial Master’s and PhD fellowships for students registered for the 2020/2021 academic year. The successful fellows will have access to resources and facilities in the WANIDA network.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for this scholarship, you must:

1. Be an African national admitted as a regional student (non-national) in a Master’s or PhD program starting the 2020/2021 academic year at one of the WANIDA partner institutions.

2. Be interested in working on one of the following priority disease areas with a supervisor at the WANIDA host institution (optional co-supervisor at a WANIDA partner institution).

Priority diseases

  • Covid-19
  • HIV
  • Malaria
  • Tuberculosis
  • Ebola
  • Mycobacterial infections
  • Neglected tropical diseases
  • Food borne pathogens

Commitments

  •  Successful Master’s fellows will be expected to:

– Conduct high quality research leading to the publication of at least 1 paper in a peer reviewed journal
– Present research at workshops and the WANIDA conference
– Graduate with a Master’s degree conferred by the same University/WANIDA-ACEPartner as in the scholarship application

  •  Successful PhD fellows will be expected to:

– Conduct high quality research leading to the publication of at least 2 papers in peer reviewed journals
– Present research at scientific meetings, including the WANIDA conference
– Contribute to the training of undergraduate students
– Graduate with a PhD degree conferred by the same University/WANIDA-ACEPartner as in the scholarship application

Funding for Partial Scholarship

The duration of the funding is 2 years for Master’s programs and 4 years for PhD programs.
The successful Master’s / PhD fellow will be supported with a partial scholarship, which can be applied towards:

– Tuition
– Research costs
– Stipend

2. Summary of research proposal including plans for partnership(s) with other ACE(s), budget and timelines (maximum 2 pages)
3. Letter of motivation (maximum 1 page)
4. Endorsement from current supervisor and ACE centre leader
5. Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
6. Proof of registration in current academic year or letter of admission
7. Official transcript from most recent degree

Each application will be evaluated by the WANIDA Scholarship Committee. Candidates will be contacted by email.
