Redeemer University's African Center of Excellence for Infectious Disease Genomics (ACEGID) was established in 2014 in partnership with academic, clinical and research institutions in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Senegal.
The center's main objective is to train African researchers in cutting-edge genomic tools and multidisciplinary approaches in order to transform clinical care, understanding of infectious diseases, improve disease surveillance and prevent epidemics on the African continent.
By developing African research capabilities and a high-quality genomics teaching program, ACEGID aims to advance health and create a surveillance network for the world's greatest health threats. ACEGID's research led to the development of new tools and countermeasures for the Ebola, Lassa fever virus and West African monkeypox virus epidemics between 2014 and 2018.
Since 2020, the center has made a major contribution to African research into the SARS-CoV-2 virus and genome sequencing.
