Title
Scientific and societal interest of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA): the case of mining activities on the land-sea continuum in West Africa (Acronym "AWAEIE")

Summary of the scientific project
As part of the mining and investment activities that companies are required to carry out, they are obliged to subject their various projects to the scrutiny of environmental assessment (EA) [1]. As a result, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) have been developed [2].

Over the years, observers and various expert committees have, rightly or wrongly, voiced numerous criticisms, particularly of mining activities in West Africa, concerning the lack of transparency of EIAs, their selection criteria, the method of public reporting, their implementation and the relevance of EIAs. With regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it became clear that "the extractive industry has the opportunity and the potential to make a positive contribution to all 17 SDGs".

The general objective of this doctoral study is (i) to highlight this opportunity through analysis of the qualitative and quantitative information collected in selected EIAs (e.g. Zircon and Gold) impacting the land-sea continuum in North-West Africa (mainly Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire), (ii) to critically analyze the methodologies implemented in the EIAs in the light of the state of the scientific art. Finally, (iii) the process(es) of public restitution of the EIAs will be analyzed.
