The African Center of Excellence for Mycotoxins and Food Safety (ACEMFS) was established in 2019 thanks to the Africa Center of Excellence Award, co-sponsored by the Association of African Universities, the World Bank, AFD and supported by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria.

The main objective of the center is to produce a skilled workforce with quality training in the use of modern functional equipment and innovative research to assess the impacts of food pathogens and toxic chemical residues on the health and economy of the West and Central African sub-region.

ACEMFS thus aims to contribute to the effective prevention and control of food poisoning, which can guide policy formulation throughout the African region. The center has expertise in parasitology, mycotoxicology, food science and nutrition.

ACEMFS offers high-quality post-graduate education (Masters and PhD) and professional training in food safety, toxicology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. On the research front, the center develops intervention strategies and products against the contamination and adverse health effects of foodborne pathogens, mycotoxins, heavy metals, veterinary drug and pesticide residues, hydrocyanic acids and polychlorinated biphenyls in food and feed. Form an ecosystem of innovative businesses with regional food production industries and stakeholders to produce safer food for sustainable public health, food security and economic prosperity.

Scientific themes:

  • Food safety
  • Toxicology
  • Molecular biology and bioinformatics

Key skills:

  • Medical imaging and bioinformatics laboratory (PC/FFFC NMR, Smartracer relaxometer , and videoconferencing system with 30 bioanalyzers and bioinformatics software)
  • Nanotechnology laboratory (Malven Zetasizer Nanos, Raman spectrometer, BET surface and porosity analyzer, carbon vapor deposition equipment, ultrasonic shaker).
  • Drugs and vaccines laboratory (fluorescence microscope, automatic DNA sequencing machine and UV/visible double-beam scanning spectrophotometer).
