The African Center of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB) was established in Nigeria in 2015 with an initial grant of $4 million, which was increased to $4.7 million following a mid-term evaluation.
Its main mandate is to build capacity and address issues related to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Its proposal for the ACE Impact has been selected and has been granted a sum of 5 million dollars for the years 2020-2024.

The objectives of the center are: to train qualified specialists in the diagnosis, management and prevention of neglected tropical diseases; to develop and produce vaccines and drugs for the prevention and treatment of neglected tropical diseases; to train manpower in the general field of molecular biotechnology techniques and forensic medicine for the resolution of related problems.
In addition, the center aims to create a mechanism and channel for security agencies and society to resolve security, legal, paternity and related issues.

The ACENTDFB offers biotechnology programs (MSc and PhD) in the thematic areas of neglected tropical diseases, a postgraduate diploma (PGD) in forensic biotechnology and a new MSc in Biomedical Forensics. It also organizes short courses in Nigeria and the West African region.

The center has expertise in antimicrobial resistance, drug development, trypanosomiasis chemotherapy, epidemiology and drug resistance, molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases, plant genetics, immunogenetics and vaccinology, ecology and molecular epidemiology of vector-borne diseases, process biotechnology and enzymology, molecular parasitology, and environmental and process biochemistry.

Scientific themes:

  • Molecular epidemiology and drug management for neglected tropical diseases (lymphatic filariasis, trypanosomiasis, rabies, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and dengue fever)
  • Application of biotechnology to forensic issues (paternity disputes, crime detection)

Key skills:

  • Two analysis/diagnostic laboratories (one housing a Luminex Multplex analyzer, ELISA plate reader and biochemical analyzer, among others, and the other a laboratory dedicated to analysis of Covid-19 samples)
  • A post-graduate research laboratory with various types of PCR equipment, including an RTqPCR, a class 2 BS (biological safety) cabinet with other laminar flow cabinets, gel documentation systems
  • Experimental animal facility for laboratory animals, small and large ruminants, with incinerator and dedicated generator
  • A team of researchers comprising 10 professors, 5 senior lecturers and the laboratory director
